Information about this Service

Researchers, including faculty members and PhD candidates, at the University of Rochester can apply to access microdata from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office. When requesting microdata, researchers have the option to request either anonymized or non-anonymized information on individuals, households, or businesses used in the EU’s aggregated statistics.

To gain access to microdata, researchers will need to follow the steps below.

  1. Submit an interest form. River Campus Libraries staff will review to ensure you are eligible and provide information needed for the next steps.
  2. Submit a research proposal to Eurostat via the Microdata Access Workflow Tool. The approval process takes an average of eight weeks.
  3. Once the research proposal is approved, Eurostat will provide access to the data. Data files will be sent directly to principal investigators (PIs) using anonymized microdata. PIs using non-anonymized data will access the data files via a secure site located in Rush Rhees Library. If you need to access files in the library, you will be provided instructions on how to do so.

Please note that if you are approved to work with non-anonymized data, you will have to access and analyze the data on the designated workstation in the library. The workstation contains a standard suite of tools including Microsoft office products, R, RStudio, and Python. If you need additional software, please indicate that in the designated location on the interest form, and we will work with you to acquire the additional tools.
