Rowland L. Collins came to the University of Rochester in 1967 and served as the Chairman of the English Department from 1972 to 1981. He was an internationally known authority on Anglo-Saxon literature and the Victorian period, and had published numerous articles on both subjects. Mr. Collins was a leading figure in landmark preservation in Rochester, and he contributed much to the community.

Mr. Collins received a Bachelor's Degree with honors from Princeton University in 1956, and a Master's Degree and Doctorate from Stanford University in 1959 and 1961, respectively.

Mr. Collins was a gifted teacher, scholar, and administrator. In the words of Dean J. Paul Hunter, "Rowland Collins brought distinction to this University, both through his own scholarship and through the outstanding leadership he provided on the campus and in the community."

Rowland and his wife Sarah spearheaded the formation of the Friends of Mt Hope [Cemetery] in 1979. When he died in 1985, "An Appreciation" of his life appeared in Epitaph, the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery newsletter.
